Day 9: Back to the lab!

We started the day by heading out to Caracoles to conduct a benthic survey. It was my turn to take photos and record data, so I began with the camera. Adam assisted by placing the transtrat at the correct point along the transient tape, and Travis held his position about 30 meters out while I worked through the survey. Once I finished my section, we switched roles for the second benthic survey. Adam stayed 30 meters out with the transient tape, Travis took over the camera, and I handled the transtrat this time. Ater completing both benthic surveys, each of us collected a seagrass sample from the area we were working in. We grabbed a small patch of seagrass and used a PVC pipe to extract the sediment and roots. We hammered the pipe into the ground, sealed the top with our hand to create suction, and gently moved it around to loosen the substrate. Then we lifted the pipe, let some water drain out, and transferred the sample into a bag for later analysis. Everyone collected their own individual sample.
