-Monday 25th
Today we went to rincon to have a little fun snorkel, it was a shallow coral reef, we got to experience see the efforts of the coral farming program but at the same time i feel we got to experience more pollution on this area than the other ones.
Something remarkable was also seeing some sea hares. And me and some others classmates were able to see some of them mating. We got to experience a rare event just by walking by the beach on a tidepool.
After that fun trip we headed back home and prepared some
delicious stuffed fish.
-Tuesday 26th
Today we got to do seagrass cores and benthic survey. This would be our second time for seagrass cores, and I personally was able to identify the species really easy, also the whole process went smoother than the first time.
Over time we have found way more Queen conch but sadly most of them are empty.
Over the afternoon we got a guess speaker that was the co-founder of
ISER-Caribbean, she got to explain to us the whole coral restauration program in
a deeper and personal level. Later at night we got some guests in the house.
NOAA crew from the Queen Conch survey showed up and the ecology professor from
the University of Puerto Rico and some master’s students. We all got to eat
dinner and have scientist talks related to Queen Conch and the career path they
took.
-Wednesday 27th
Today we got to do one more benthic survey and mangrove root survey, we conducted this procedure on a new site. Collado was a more isolated site especially because until today the weather let us visit it. During my benthic survey I was able to encounter another sea slug, it was impressive to see its live colors.
After coming back from the water, we got another guest speaker that talked about interconnectivity in the wahoo population in Puerto Rico. This presentation was mainly focused on bioinformatics. This presentation was good to hear that the stuff that we learn in the classroom gets to be applied in real life scenarios.
We know that the days here are coming to a end soon, must of us really we don't want to leave. But at the same time this encourages to some day get back to Puerto Rico
