The best way to start a monday

The best way to start a Monday is at the beach! We had lots of fun today at Steps beach, which the name is no statement to the single set of stone stairs on the side of the beach :/

The snorkel there was amazing and there were lots of parrotfish, which I was really excited to see, and we even saw some (extremely)  large angelfish! After being in the water so long, we had the opportunity to dry off and walk around to see the tide pools around the beach. Unfortunately, the tide was pretty low so there wasn't much to see other than a bajillion snails, but Caitlin found an eel! Definitely one of the coolest finds of the day, and I found a couple of decorator crabs hiding under piles of sargassum and blending into rocks. There were also lots of anemones in the pools, along with a lot of urchins! I was afraid I'd step on them, especially when they could be so small.

I also had an awesome after lunch nap in the sand– the weather has been great during the trip and the sun made me sleepy– not to mention how calming the ocean is! The only bad part about the trip was seeing the dead coral and hearing about how the Elkhorn coral that was once vibrant and full of life was gone from the reef. Hopefully one day it can make a recovery.

I love that the day was unplanned, leaving us to explore Rincon and even grab a couple of souvenirs! My favorite part of the day was dinner, an absolutely wonderful restaurant in Mayaguez (La Jibarita)-- thanks to Alaya for the recommendation-- and the food was delicious! I got a way too big plate of nachos that I had to share with Jenna and JJ, and spent time with everyone talking about our finds during our morning snorkel. There is so much more to explore in Puerto Rico, and I am so glad to be spending this time with such great company!

(going to add pictures later, just you wait!)
