We have been working hard with sediment cores, transecting, and swimming in general. This weekend, we had time to explore the island and its quaint charm. Sunday was a fun day indeed. We traveled to Llanos Costa and hiked to gorgeous cliffsides where we snapped some selfies and explored around the edge. I admired the cacti, the geological cliff faces as well as the erosion and weathering effects on the rocks. I also observed huge amounts of sargassum floating and washing into the little coves and crevices from the rocks and boulders. The views were intimidating but spectacular at the same time. After our trek back to the vans, we saw a helado stand with a gentleman who sold us some coconut helado (ice cream). A perfect sweet treat reward after our journey. We loaded up and headed to the salt flats, where we witnessed the phenomenon of Dianella turning a pink color due to the high salinity concentration in the area. Dr. Steichen collected samples for curiosity to see what could be spotted on a more micro-level. After the saltflats, we went to dinner in town and walked around to listen to the festive music and shop around with the local vendors and artists. What a time.
