Restoration Project in Puerto Rico? I think yes!

Today, we had a lovely tour of ISER Caribe, where we got to learn about the crab, sea urchin, and coral nursery at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. This was such an amazing experience as I got to learn the system techniques the grad students use to keep the animals safe and happy. I'm currently an intern at the Sea Life Facility at TAMUG, so I got to compare my experience working in the aquaculture field with the work the students perform at the restoration site. I had some great conversations with each of the nursery biologists and the management team. I was so happy to see some beautiful coral, which included species from the genus Orbicella, Acropora, Platygyra, and even pillar coral. Fun fact, pillar coral is a rare species of coral due to the vulnerability of the stony coral tissue disease and the inability to respond well to the medicine administered.  Enjoy the pictures of the nursery!

This tank had some Diadema, long spiny urchins, feeding on some Ulva algae (green algae).

Here is a species of brain coral!
