Media Luna, Microbes, and Marine Life

Today we spent the morning out at Media Luna, which might be the most beautiful site we’ve visited so far. My group focused on transects and benthic surveys, measuring seagrass and observing the variety of organisms living in and around the bed. After finishing our data collection, we got to snorkel around the reef, which was a great break and a chance to really take in the biodiversity—schools of fish, colorful corals, and so much movement beneath the surface.

Back on land, we listened to a fascinating presentation by Johana Rotterova about ciliates and protists. It was eye-opening to realize how much life exists at the microscopic level and how essential these organisms are to marine ecosystems. We ended the day with a tour of Isla Magueyes, where we got to see aquaculture labs and live specimens like crabs, urchins, and corals. It was a packed day full of both science and adventure, and I’m excited to keep building on everything we learned today.
