These past days have been exquisite and exhausting at the same time. I got to experience the complexities and the biodiversity that the corals here in Puerto Rico have to offer. I spotted so many different fish free diving and even found a huge cowrie, which made my year. Saw a cute box fish, parrot fish, butterfly fish, two cuttlefish with big piercing eyes, an emperor angelfish, and so many species of tang that it blew my mind. The coral reef we explored wasn't untouched, but I was still in awe of the layers of complexities that were present, and it gives me hope that the reef restoration in this region will make an impact for years to come. I practiced more with transecting and benthic surveys, and when we got back to the lab, we worked on seagrass core samples, and I got to look at very cool phytoplankton under the microscope and fill out a cell count sheet. Lab work can feel a little tiring at times, but entering data at home feels rewarding to accomplish. I cannot wait to continue perfecting our techniques, and as a team, I feel as if we are starting to find the groove and balance of living and working with each other.
