Last day of the Trip!

Today was the last day of our journey. We started the day out with a fun snorkel at a past site we went to for data collection, Laurel. I was able to get a lot of photos of some cool-looking sponges and coral before the conditions got too rough. The conditions were a little rough for the day, but I feel we had worse conditions prior this week, so I felt like everyone conducted themselves in a well-mannered way while being in the water today. The highlight of this snorkel was that I was able to get some photos of an adult crab preying on a sea urchin and watching it pull the spines out. It sounds disturbing, but it was really cool to see. Once we were done with snorkeling, Jaaziel Hernandez, who is a sponge expert but honestly is a man of many trades in the conservation world, gave us a presentation on his previous and current work with sponges. His presentation was very informal and entertaining; the way he spoke about his work and conservation as a whole was very passionate, and he is a highly intelligent individual. At the end of his talk he said, "We all came from the Big Bang, which means we are all stars," and just hearing that type of viewpoint was very inspiring, and this comment stayed with me. The highlight of the day, though, was going on the bioluminescence tour. Swimming in the water with the bioluminescence was honestly the most magical experience ever.
