For the days leading up to this trip, I didn't really feel hyped-- not that I wasn't excited to go, but I didn't get those pre-trip jitters I normally do when I'm looking forward to traveling. Being here now, I am so excited!! We left and landed yesterday-- it was my best friends birthday and she works at the airport so I got to see her before we left, which was awesome-- and the trip went smoothly! Puerto Rico is gorgeous from above, and even more beautiful underwater! For our first day, we got to go to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez on Isla Magueyes where we set up our lab space that we will be spending our days analyzing our data. We had lunch at Magueyes, and after we got to meet some grad students from the university. Ignacio, Janluis and Carolina all gave insightful tips on what to do if we were interested in grad school, and some background on what they were researching! We spent the rest of the day with practicing with our transects, taking sediment cores, and placing a mangrove litter trap. I felt like a real marine biologist :0 We saw so many amazing things in the water today, so I can't wait to see what we might see tomorrow!
