Instead of sleeping in on our day off, we all woke up bright and early at 6 am to get some breakfast before hitting the road to Steps Beach. This spot was new to all of us, including our professors, but what a gem this location was! The beach was stunning; the water was a variety of shades of blue that would get darker the farther you were from land. The sand was so warm but thick, and there were so many cool finds on land. When I wasn't swimming, I was looking for shells, sea glass, and observing the few animals that inhabited the sand. We were informed that there was a large influx of coral at this beach, and the locals weren't wrong. There were sea fans everywhere, with reefs extending from one side of the beach to the other. Unfortunately, a lot of the coral present was dead, but I did get to see more live coral at this location than at others we have previously visited. After a nice morning at the beach, we explored the town and did a little shopping before enjoying a nice dinner in town. I'm so happy we are able to complete work in the field for our classes, but also have a break and enjoy the beauty of Puerto Rico!
