5/23: Unexpected Treats

Back to Caracoles to collect data in that area finally. Today I will be collecting sediment cores with Dr. Matich. Today is also the last day for sediment core collection. The shallow and warm waters of Caracoles made me feel fortunate to be hammering for sediment samples in this area. My team and I worked efficiently and finished quickly while Dr. Matich swam off to place two of our BRUVs farther out. We swam around and explored the mangrove area a little better this time around, taking pictures along the way (peep the juvenile barracuda). Caracoles isn’t called the treasure Cayo for no reason as Jenna found a gold ring in the sand!! After Caracoles, we made our way over to Enrique to run a few transects then snorkel around for fun. I sat out this time due to the amount of times I was stung around my ankles in Caracoles. The ladies that usually take us out on the boats were kind enough to share their snacks while I waited for everyone to come back on board (shout out to Jennifer and Aliya!). We all enjoyed a lunch made from love by Captain Frank next to the dock tarpon. In the lab, I finally had the chance to count phytoplankton cells on the microscope from our plankton tow. Many diatoms as expected. Back at home (I mean Airbnb!) we unexpectedly had the chance to end our day with ice cream from an old school ice cream truck (this is why you keep cash in your wallet ;D ).
