I woke up in La Parguera, PR this morning, and hearing the birds chirp when I woke up was the most sensational way to wake up. We all woke up and made a big breakfast and got ready for the day; everyone is in good spirits for what the day has to offer. We went into town and went grocery shopping. The grocery store was similar to the grocery store back home, but the music was definitely a lot more lively compared to the grocery stores back home. I also found it interesting that a lot of their produce was wrapped in plastic wrap and served on a Styrofoam tray. We filled up 5 shopping carts filled with food for the next two weeks, and the total amount was surprisingly cheaper than what I expected. Once we got done grocery shopping, we all met back at the Airbnb and got ready for fieldwork. We went over to Isla La Magueyes, which is operated by the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico. Once we arrived, we walked on a trail that was known as Tsunami Point, which is the highest point on the island, and we all ate lunch there. Once we finished lunch, we had a lunch and learn with three graduate students from the BERG Lab (Ignacio, Carolina, and Janluis). They were all super kind, and their research projects were so fascinating and, honestly, really cool. I am very happy and thankful that they were able to come speak with us. It was nice to meet young individuals whose work can lead to advancement in science and can lead to influential strides in marine conservation.
